1st Oil Change - Used 1998 GS400
Hi
I am changing the oil on a recent purchase of mine, a used 1998 GS400 with 114K miles.
I don't know if the previous owners used synthetic or dino oil, so I am thinking of running a syntho-blend of 5w30 just in case.
What do you think? Which brands do you recommend or would avoid?
The local shop wants to use Quaker State blend for the service...
Thanks

Synthetic Oil
werewolf, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30 or Mobil 1 5W-30 and put in a Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter too.

Whats the difference between the Extended Performance from Mobil 1 5w-30, and just the regular Mobil 1 5w-30?
The price is always a dollar or so higher on the Extended Per. Does anyone know whats in it? Ive never read the back to figure it out.

I know that but I was wondering whats the difference between them both.
They are both FULLY synthetic. I was wondering more along the lines of ingredients. Just curious as I always am If any oil freaks know.

Yes. I drove the LFA.

I would just stick to regular Mobil 1 5w30 if you want synthetic. I use regular 5w30. My car has 172k miles on it and counting, with no engine problems.

Wrong. Neither is fully synthetic. Mobil 1 contains at least some group III base stocks, which are NOT synthetic. Synthetics are group IV and V basestocks. As far as group III oils are concerned, Pennzoil Platinum is currently one of best on the market. For a true synthetic (group IV), Amsoil is king.

Mobil 1 here as well... tried Royal Purple, and noticed a little more top end noise than with the Mobil 1... Going to switch back...
Mobil 1 may be partially group 3, but it is still an excellent oil that is definitely more readily available than most others...
