Default Oil Filters: The Old High Quality One?

I was looking under the hood of my new 08 FJ Cruiser and the oil filter caught my attention. I know M1, Pure One, and most of the aftermarket brands use the same size filter for the FJC as for the SC300 and the SC400. I took this picture... is this the old filter that was so sought after? Before they discontinued it and replaced it with the cheaper one (YZZD1) Toyota/Lexus sells now? I can't remember the model number, but the 20004 rings a bell to me.

Anyway, if it is, it looks like Toyota still makes them. I had thought they discontinued this particular filter. Anyone know how to get some more of these? I called my dealer and they had no idea what I was talking about and likely they are going to replace it with the cheaper model.

That's the old Denso Japan filter. I was also under the impression that they were discontinued. Was your FJ assembled in Japan? It's possible, and I'm only speculating when I say this, that the 90915-20004 is still manufactured, but not imported into the USA, or something along those lines. The TRD filter that may or many not still be made is just a rebadged version of the 20004. The Taiwanese YZZD1 is fine as a replacement. Afterall, it's still Denso. I use the YZZD3 on my V8.

I'll have to try to remember to take a look at the FJ Cruisers sold down here to see what they have under the hood.

You can get them.. they are about $13 plus shipping each. I would say not worth it. If Toyota warranties the YZZD.... then it is good enough for me.

See the link.. http://www.newtoyotaparts.com/product/?id=2217

yep, that's the $10 JDM OEM Denso filter, lol.

YZZDx is just fine though.

The YZZD filters are not a great filter when it comes to filtering out the real tiny particles. I had a UOA done with Particle count on a 90915-YZZD3 filters and that POS filter let in 95% of 20micron particles. To contrast that with a Mobil1 filter, it filtered 85% of 20 micron particles. I might be comparing apples to oranges here since M1 filters have some synthetic media to it but it gives you a glimpse of how poor YZZD filters filter.

Interesting...

I usually use the YZZD filters for my ES300 and my RX330. Now this has me thinking. Anyone have more insight to this theory?

My theory is that new engines have more particles being generated (breakin) before the first oil change so Toyota puts a quality filter in there from the factory. After the first oil change (5K miles), there must be fewer particles from the new engine, so they use a cheaper made in Thailand filter. My new GX has the 20004 filter in there. There are a few dealers selling these (imported from Japan).

My 07 GX came with the 20004 oil filter. I believe I read that the 20004 oil filter is only available in Japan.

I would like to use the 20004, but if it is over $10, I'd rather use the M1 or PureOne. And definitely one of those over the YZZDx filters. someone did an extensive study of this filter, either here or on BITOG and found that it was inferior to the top aftermarket filters and the 20004 ones.

Those are made by Donaldson, according to BITOG. I can get Donaldson and Fleetguard(Cummins) locally.

I'm using a Mahle filter on my car, it was speced for a Sienna/Camry/Avalon but it does interchange with a Fram PH3614.

You never know what surprizes an aftermarket filter may have in store for you.

I think you will find that the Lexus RX350s made in Canada come equipped from the factory with a made-in-USA oil filter.
