Question Synthetic oil or not??

I have just recently acquired my 2000 lexus gs300. I just hit 90k and reading about the 90k service. I went for an oil change the other day at grease monkey and inquired about synthetic. They said with my mileage now, it wouldnt really make a difference and that it usually helps when you have been using from the beginning. What are your thoughts? Should I stay with regular oil or go with syntho?? 40 bucks vs. 80 bucks...

Thanks!

synthetic baby. i used synthetic in my high mileage cars (100k Miata, 200k Volvo) and also added Lucas gear oil to help the oil viscosity. i haven't changed my GS's oil yet (i've only had it for about 3000 miles anyway) but it's on the to-do list soon. i plan on using synthetic.

What's your oil change mileage interval? If you're old-school, a typical driver and change every 3K then it really doesn't matter - but good waste of natural resource though.

But if you change between 4K to 6K or 2X a year, then might as well go with synthetic.

Like you, I have the same car with 43K miles. And personally I run Royal Purple.

go synthetic! i use amsoil 5-30 with pureone filter, Wix and amsoil filters are also good choices i use both of those in both the GS400 & SC300.

I heard that changing to synthetic oil could create a leak where none was before. Not sure if that's true or not.

Im not sure if its 100% true, but my mechanic always tells me that once you go synthetic, you should NOT go back to regular oil to avoid such things.

Default Synthetic Hands Down

Smoother ride and acceleration, less friction for better gas mileage, higher burning temp, longer lasting time change intervals, and best of all, quality piece of mind. Whats not to love?

the new synthetic formulas today are meant to be compatible with conventional oil, so you should have no worries. this was a problem back in the old days when it was still fairly new.

i dont usually rev my engine that high, i used synthetic on my honda with a vtec, but not for my lexus. i change my oil every 3k anyways synthetic or not. i dont think gas mileage will change just cuz u use synthetic oil, mostly in ur head. it's good enough if u just change every 3k

This thread further reminds me that I am due for an oil change. But last winter I had synthetic put in. Still not 100% sure on how synthetic holds up to to hot summer driving conditions compared to regular conventional oil.
