catalyst converter bank 2
SO, my CEL went on, and i took it in today, my catty converter bank 2 needs to be replaced. he said for a new part its probably 1000. anyone know how important and how soon ill need to change this? i dont need my smog check anytime soon yet *knock on wood*. How much do used ones go for? and how much total do mechanics charge for labor and used part?

Please include year, model and year. It may or may not cause any damage to the car yet. The bad case is your gas mileage goes down, loss performance and the worse case is if it clogged up so bad it may get really hot. I'd see that before.

Yes. I drove the LFA.

Your profile says 2002 GS300... that manifold/converter assembly is all one piece. Definately not a cheap part from Lexus. Labor wise, i wouldnt pay more than 1.5 hours of labor to replace it. Keep in mind, O2 sensors are known to seize in the manifold, so you may be unknowingly replacing one of those as well. Id say, all in all, id expect to pay about 1500 total for this repair. You may be able to find a used manifold on ebay or on here because people have gone to headers or turbos. And as Nuum said, your performance may suffer due to a bad/clogged cat. Keep an eye on it.

the mechanic i went to said they have a used cat, and would do everythig for 400. my buddys dad said, i shouldn't have this problem yet since i just changed my 02 sensor last month. plus it shouldn't go out until after 100k miles. he suggested for me to bring it in to his shop so he can check it out. he said i may just need to reset something. im lost..hahha

if you are getting a p0420 code or p0421 code, and the o2 sensors are functioning properly, then you have a bad cat, plain and simple...
because it is internal to the exhaust manifold, I don't think you'll be finding it cheap anywhere unless you find one used (hopefully it doesn't have the same problem), as you can't just hack/weld in a new converter... As has been mentioned, it's not the end of the world, and may never cause a driveability problem, but may also cause decrease in performance and excessive temperatures in that area...
it will definitely cause you to fail an emissions test, so you do have an issue there...
resetting the pcm will get rid of the light for a while, but as soon as the engine runs it's diagnostic on the catalytic converter that has failed, it will turn back on, might be a couple days, might be as much as a month - it only runs its tests while certain parameters are being met, and then some things have to fail a test twice before it will set the light as well...
