Default 99 GS 300 Serp Belt

I've tried to replace my serp belt yesterday, but was unable to break the bolt by turning clockwise. I didn't want to use a breaker bar, didn't want to break the bolt on the tensioner. My questions, is it normal to have to apply a lot of pressure to break the bolt loose? Once the bold it loose, how much does the the bold have to be turned to release the spring? Do you turn it the opposite direction to tighten the belt once installed? It looks very easy, but I don't want to break the bolt. Thanks in advance..

The bolt shouldn't come lose. It's the pulley assembly that should move.

Thanks Dave, I will try a longer wrench or a socket with a breaker bar, I didn't want to force it and break something. I haven't fixed the leak yet. Will get around to it in a couple weeks. I cleaned around to gasket and removed the cam cover to inspect for leakage around the seals, I don't see a sign of leakage around he cam at this time.

Thanks GSteg,

I'll try it in a couple days. I just wasn't sure if I had to turn the bolt several times until the pulley moved. It's spring loaded so it shouldn't take much effort to loosen the bolt.

Thanks RI-Lex,

I read that on the 300 you removed the belt by turning the screw clock wise. I'll try it again in a couple days. Didn't want to break something because it's my daily driver.

The more leverage you can get with the wrench the easier it will be to hold the pulley down.

i just replaced mine on my 98 GS3.

you don't have to loosen up a screw or remove a screw at all. just hook up your 12mm or 14mm socket wrench on your tensioner and then put a 2-3 foot steel tube over the handle of your socket wrench to get more leverage and then rotate the entire thing to the right.

what you'll find is that the tensioner will move and free up some slack on the belt so you can remove it.

to put the belt back on, just make sure you thread it around the right way and then get some leverage again to allow you to slip the belt back on to the tensioner.
