Welcome to the first in a series of Pictorials on basic DIY car maintenance. I am your host for this trip and I will guide you through processes some of you never deemed possible. For this Pictorial (as with most) I will be using my 1996 Chevy Cavalier. The basic fundamentals are the same and can be applied to your own car, lexus or not. For Draining and refilling the Automatic Transmission(RWD)/Transaxle(FWD), the procedure is as follows:
Step 1: Place car on jackstands or ramps.
Step 2: Loosen Trans pan bolts until trans fluid leaks into catch pan. *NOTE* It doesnt matter if it mixes with engine oil, it will be sorted/filtered when recycled.

Step 3: It doesnt matter where the bolts go (order-wise), so just remove them completely after fluid stops draining and set them down like so:

Step 4: Remove old gasket, clean magnets and pan and install new gasket:

It should look like this when done (more or less):

This is what you should see (depending on make and model)

Install new filter:

Old filter from my trans (152K) just for ****s and giggles:

Reinstallation is the reverse of removal. Simply put the bolts in at the corners first...hand tight. then reinstall EVERY OTHER BOLT hand tight. Then fill in the gaps with the remaining bolts, hand tight. Then torque them to the appproriate spec, in sequence (every other bolt around the pan). Then refill with appropriate fluid and you are done!
