Default 98 gs400 timing belt change at 60k

I will be taking my gs for it's 60k service soon and the dealer has recomended the timing belt and water pump due to the age of the vechicle. Has anyone heard of a belt failing due to age?

everything deteriorates over time.

the belt, water pump, and cam seals are the more important in this change i believe. your belt tensioner might still be good.

i think i should change my stuff soon..

whats the average cost for all the parts?

i've tried to do a search to find an instance of someone posting of a failed Lexus timing belt on CL and on google, and haven't found one so I think there is considerable leeway you can get away with Toyota timing belts.

However, if you're planning on keeping your car for a few more years, there's no point in trying to completely use up your current timing belt.
Just change it now, and nothing to worry about in that area for 10more years/rest of the life of the car.

It is sort of like a pit stop in a car race, there's no logic to go 80% of the race in a 1-stop race just because the car is capable to make it that long, just pit sometime around the middle to spread the workload between the old and new parts, even if you're not going to completely use it up.

Ive seen many timing belts fail in my years with Lexus. At 60k miles and 11 years old, i would probably recommend it if your car came in for service also. Will it fail tomorrow? Probably not, but if you plan on having the car for a while, you should just take care of it, and be good for the next 11 years.
