Default High Mileage on 92sc400

Please help. I am a first time lexus person and am considering purchasing an immaculately maintained 92 sc400. The price offered was $7K. The only thing that concerns me is that the car has 206000. I was not going to pull the trigger, but I ran a carfax that checked out okay and also talked to the dealership that performed all the scheduled maintenance on the car. They say that the tranny on the machine can go twice that much.

The problems already serviced are: radiator (new) at 150,000 (b/c didn't hold pressure); ECU pump replaced (car died intermittently before that); and A/C (new compressor). Oil changed personally by second owner who bought it from original owner at 196,000.

Should I just keep on looking? I know I'm not buying a new car, but am a bit concerned about the high miles. Any help would be of great help.

Default Check it out

That’s a lot of mileage – I’d think that you’d be able to find another SC4 with fewer miles for about the same bucks. Where in TX are you?

That being said, if the SC is as clean and well-maintained as you indicate it’ll be hard to find a better car for $7K. You should check into the power steering pump and timing belt though – find out when those were changed out last. They are weak spots on a high mileage SC4, but if they’ve been replaced in the recent past, you’re likely good to go. Another trouble spot are the gauges – that is, the lighting of the gauges. They’re difficult to replace but are very expensive to have dealer fix. Those are about all of the troublesome areas on the car I can think of – it’s probably one of the few cars with that much mileage that I’d consider.

It’s a fine car – I just got rid of a SC4, it was beautiful, fast, comfortable, and reliable – a hard combination to beat. Good luck!

if it helps I myself just purchased a 92 sc400 with 68,000 and I paid 12,500.00 I also did some checking and found the vehicle will run 250,000 miles with little trouble, the vehicle has a few things to look for leaking power steering pump, leakage inside headlamps shows water drops on inside of headlamps, and check when timing belt changed, hope this helps, its a fun vehicle to drive, good luck !!!
