Default 2002 GS430 Timing Belt + Water Pump Charge

I just had my timing belt, water pump, tensioner + bolt, 2 idler arms, thermostat + gasket, and antifreeze done for $1138. That broke down to $502 for labor(5.5 hrs) + $636 for parts. The shop used all OEM parts. I think in total that was fair. My GS has almost 94k but I thought since it's almost 10 years old, it's time. What ya think?

Ouch, sounds to me like you overpaid a bunch.

The price for an Aisin timing belt kit TKT001 (timing belt, water pump and gasket, tensioner, idler pulley, thermostat gasket) is $162 plus shipping at RockAuto.com. Add another $10 for Prestone coolant and a few more $ for a thermostat, so parts come to around $200.

There's nothing tricky about the labor and if you can't do it yourself, any reputable mechanic can do the job and I'll bet they'll do it for less than what the dealer charges.

thats price is about right, i bought all OEM parts and it came out to about $400 bucks shipped from Pembroke Pines in Florida.

Labor is usually the most expensive part in this job since it basically strips down the whole front end of the car.

I honestly believe for this job, NO one, should use anything other than OEM parts, but thats my opinion,

but back on topic, I think doing that full job, is just about on point my mechanic charges $950 for that, its not that far off

This is like an old time BMW forum; people think there is a magic to the Lexus name on the part.

Folks, in Japan it's a Toyota, same car, no magic name.
Guess what, Toyota buys the belts from someone who specializes in making belts: like gates, Goodyear or dayco. They may also source the water pump; the alternators are usually made by Denso, the transmissions by Ansin, etc., etc., etc.

Lexus Branded:
Water pump is around $160, timing belt $50, thermostat $20, idlers 2x $90, tensioner $57; I get $317, but maybe a few more parts say $330, and $350 delivered.
There is probably a Lexus branded Kit at a 10%-20% discount.

I paid about $950 to have Toyota do an Avalon timing belt, which included all new belts t/o, all new water hoses, new water pump, idlers, etc., antifreeze flush, transmission flush, oil change, etc., etc. - and that was most probably too high, but too Cold out to DIY & was not in mood to hunt up a responsible mechanic.
All too often, Dealer = $tealer IMHO

You do know that in Japan, and Lexus is a Lexus, and a Toyota is a Toyota, right? Reguardless of the name on the badge. And even in recent years, Toyota started using the Lexus name in Japan as well. So they do have Lexus's in Japan... sure, they all use Toyota parts, thats pretty obvious. They are top quality parts, why wouldnt someone use them? Ive seen aftermarket timing belts, and compared them to the Toyota sourced belt... huge difference. Ill take the Toyota belt any day.
