2001 ES300 Timing belt change needed after 10 years?
Just bought a 2001 ES 3000. It only has 26k. Do timing belts deteriorate over time? Should it be swapped despite the low-mileage? My mechanic suggests I do it. Upsell or sage counsel?
On my 1991 LS400 I didn't change the timing belt until 2010 and after 104,000 miles. The 19 year old belt did not appear significantly worn or cracked.
how hard is it on that motor to pull the timing belt top cover and just inspect it....?
not too hard. there's 5 or 6 screws holding the timing belt cover in place and you have to remove the bolts that keep the engine damper in place (I think that's what you call it). Takes maybe 10 to 15 minutes at most.
i would say yes to replace it. the 300 motors arent technically an interference motor but it should be replaced to prevent any damage. even if it looks okay i would still do it 10 years or 90k whichever comes first.

the 97-98 non vvt-i engines are non interference motors. the 99-01 models come with vvt-i and are interference engines so you would do a whole lot of damage if the timing belt were to fail.
