Battery Change without killing radio
My son purchased a 97 es300 awhile back and to make a long story short, the battery will need to be replaced soon. I know the lexus radio has a security code feature and we are not sure if it was ever set. Since the radio display is burned out, there’s no way to tell if a code is set or not.
Here’s my question, is there any way to change a battery while maintaining a charge to the car at all times so we don’t run the risk of having a dead radio. Even though the display is burned out, the radio works fine and we don’t want to go through the trouble of fixing the display just because of a security code.
Would appreciate any help on this
Thanks

Many people have replaced the battery with the engine running. You have to be extremely careful not to ground the positive terminal/cable, but if done correctly, the engine will stay running with the battery removed, then reinstall new battery, and retain all radio, clock, etc... Not something i would recommend for someone who doesnt know much about working on cars though. If the terminal is grounded, the engine will shut off, and there is a chance of damage to the alternator or blown fuses.

It's not a good idea to leave the engine running witout battery attached.
The battery acts as capacitor and prevents from voltage peaks.
Without this there is chance to burn out your ECU with voltages peaks of 18-20V
