Default Noise: Will new Trunk Strut Fix it???

Hey everyone,

For a while now, my 95 SC400 makes a noise whenever it goes over a bump or any kind of dip at speed. The noise is like a thumping and it almost sounds like the trunk bounces up and down.

The reason I think it might be the trunk struts are because the trunk occasionally falls down and my mechanic said that they are just worn out struts. Also, if I push down on the trunk it makes a similiar noise but not as loud of course. Just purchased new trunk struts on here and will install when I get them. Should this fix the thumping noise? The car would be SO much more enjoyable to drive w/out that annoying noise!

Get a 2nd opinion if you are not mechanically incline.

It can be:
- sway bar endlinks and/or bushings
- ball joints
- lower control arm bushings
- strut mounts
- or just a loose bolt/nut

Your trunk strut wouldnt have any effect if the trunk is closed. It has hinges and a lock, the struts just help push it up and hold it when its opening.

is there anything loose at all in the trunk? jack, spare tire, tool kit, speaker box, etc?

Start with the obvious...

if nothing at all is loose inside the trunk, start looking at suspension stuff as BDSL suggested...

it is NOT the struts that hold the trunk up, as already been mentioned, they don't do anything when the trunk is closed...

The 1 SC is well known about bad upper control arms. You can ask a friend to push up and down on the rear bumper and listen for the noise.

Well...there is NO noise when I push up/down on the rear bumper or the sides of the car. The ONLY time I can get the car to make a similiar noise is when I push directly down on the trunk itself. I really think it is something trunk related I just can't figure out what

If youre sure then get a wrench and check the bolts on the hinges and the lock.
