How to Break-In Your New Car

Wholly counter-intuitive advice on the web site. Since I'm picking up a new LS430 soon, I'm interested in what you folks think.

Lexus Fanatic
i usually drive a new car with variable speed, not staying at a constant speed for a long time, and no heavy foot on the gas...with japanese cars, my experience has been very good as they are extremely reliable.

Lexus Champion
The Lexus V8 appears to be both mechanically robust and well designed; 300k miles with only routine service is easily attainable (have close friend who finally turned their 92 LS over to their (now) 16 y/o son and it has over 330k on it!! The replacement?? 02 LS430, of course.).
So, I'd say that the factory rec'd procedures work reasonably well. Motoman made some interesting points, but it would take more than one individual's observations/opinions to offset the recommendations from the engineering team responsible for engine development in a company with the wherewithal to sacrifice a few thousand alloy engines (if necessary) in durability testing, for me. (Sorry about long sentence.)
I'd suggest that you go with what you know........
And welcome to CL!!!

I think the best part of the advice is an early oil change despite what Lexus might say...and varying speed....the fact is that their engines are engineered to a level that none of this probably makes a lot of difference...and unlike the motorcycle racing example...what difference does it make since engine will seldom be used anywhere close to its RPM and horsepower potential.
