Arrow Changing the gas filter?

How often does one need to change the gas filter and what brand is preferred? I have 93 GS300 pushing 160K miles.

Also, on that car, can gear oil be changed, and if yes, then how often?

Thanks,

Ed

The gas filter is supposed to be a lifetime filter. But if that was my car I'd change it every 60K. I highly recommend the factory filter.

Sure diff fluid can be changed. A simple drain and refill. Do it evry 15K. Thats my personal recommendation. When you buy it at the local auto parts store. Get the bottle with the pump. It will make it much easier when refilling the diff.

DD, so you are saying I don't have to use the Toyota-made fluid for the rear diff refill?

For the diff, no. Just make sure you buy a major brand.

I use Amsoil 75-90W synthetic. Devil Dog is right. It is a bear to fill at home. I bought a long (6 ft) clear vinyl tube and a funnel. THe tube fits snuggly into the fill hole and I work it around the various body and frame parts and come out over the right rear tire in the fender well and stick a funnel in the tube there. Then I start pouring fluid into the funnel and let gravity work until the fluid practically stops flowing and starts dripping into the catch pan under the fill hole. I pull the tube out from the fill hole and let it drain out the extra fluid until it is just a slow trickle coming out and then I replace the plug. Not very efficient but it works for me.

Sorry to disagree with you guys but I don't think
Fuel Filters are LIFETIME , the sediments in the
fuel from the tank and pumpare trapped and held by the filter. Sooner or later it's going to clog causing the Fuel Pump to work harder to get the fuel through, resulting in a overheated faulty fuel pump. I know they don't list it as a replacement part on the schedule, and I don't know why. But I chnaged my LS400 '91
and the "BLACK" stuff drained out on the pump side was GROSS !
The filter is $36 and about 45 careful mins to change.

I do agree with you, it should be changed. But, I will say this. I have NEVER seen a fuel filter clog and damage a fuel pump in the 13 years I have worked for Lexus. That black stuff that drains from the filter is gross, thats why I would change mine!

FYI

DevilDog,

How many miles would you go before changing?

i just had some service done at a fluid service station (Castrol is where I did it). there are others like jiffy lube or something

I did full flush-refill radiator(with the red coolant)
I changed gear oil synthetic
Engine flush and Full syntetic Oil Change and filter(not just drain and fill)
Fuel filter change
PCV valve changed

Here are some photos from the place. This service was done when I hit 65k miles

All the above items cost me 182 dollars and it took about 40 minutes for the whole thing.

fuel filter part number (1992 SC400).
The gunk that came out of the fuel filter was disgusting... must be changed...

also changed PCV valve. (1992 SC400) simple to do and brough the idle to exact 700rpm with no surge and started seeing better gas mileage.
