Power steering making AWFUL oise when cold..
Hey I searched through maintenance posts about the PS but nothing like this problem.
This morning I started up the car and I hear this loud whining noise, it sounded very much like when you drive your car in reverse at about 10MPH. A really loud whine. I tried revving the car to see ifi t would go away but it got louder! I'm thinking oh crap, there's something in the engine bay..
I start to drive and noticed when I turn on a corner the noise comes back, must be the power steering. It does another noise when it's in the middle of day (not 45F out) sort of a loud groan when I turn the wheel also.
The rack and pinion piece/bar is leaking, it's been recommended to replace it. The power steeing pump doesn't look to be leaking, at least not from the top. Is it the serpenteine belt? or is there another belt for the power steering?

hot fluid -> fluid expands -> higher fluid level -> reduce or no noise.
That pretty much explained what you observed!
It's now obvious that you need to fix the leak and/or top off with fluid.
