ES-300 Timing Belt Change?
As a new member, I've been surfing thru this forum, and the "timing belt" issue for ES-300's is very puzzling. Several owners have spoken of replacing the belt on their ES300's. However, my 1998 Lexus Owner's Manual Supplement at 90,000 mile schedule (pg 87) calls for replacing the timing, EXCEPT ES-300.
ES-300 owners chime in here.

Welcomes to CL. The timing belt on pre ES 98( without VVT-i) usually due at 120K, because of the non-interference engine. But the ES with VVT-i engine(99+) will due at 90K.

VVT-i: ............
Yep, you're right, the 120k service schedule (pg 91) does recommend replacing the timing belt for vehicles driven under Special Operating Conditions. If the vehicle is not operated under any of the five (5) Special Conditions, is it still necessary to replace the timing belt? This is a warm weather highway car. If the belt breaks are we at risk of bending valves, or other serious damage, or is it just a tow-charge plus timing belt replacement?

Lexus said those ES engine without VVT-i won't bend the valve, but I rather be safe than sorry. While doing 80 mph on hwy and the belt break or the water pump lock up...no thanks. Also replace the water pump and let the tech. check all the tensioner pulley and idle pulley to make sure they are o.k.
