Default California Emissions Warranty Enhancement

to all lexus 96-98 owners. i just received a letter from lexus stating that they are enhancing the emissions warranty on our vehicles for vehicles in california. the new warranty coverage extends our emissions warranty to 14 years or 150,000 miles from the vehicle's in service date, whichever comes first. so basically, if you ever fail a smog check, your lexus will be fixed for free. the warranty covers:

-evaporative storage canister
-evaporative system pressure sensor
-fuel cap
-fuel tank
-fuel tank filler neck
-purge valve
-tank vapor vent line
-three way valve
-any other part or component between the fule tank and the intake manifold (but not including the intake manifold) designed to contain or conduct fuel vapor from the fuel system.

hope this was helpful and informative for everyone.

Hey, I got the same thing in the mail a couple of days ago too. Good to know other people received the same letter too.

Now I'm wondering how often does a 98 GS have to get smogged? I bought my car used in 2001, and I haven't had to get it smogged yet... so can anyone help me out? Is it 2 years too?

All cali is doing is updating the list of what is covered in the emission warranty. These parts are already covered in 99 and up. Evaporative systems have changed greatly in the last 4-6 years. Much more complicated.

zenki300,
Should require a smog every other year upon initial ownership. Your probably due this year. Only new purchases are exempt from the first required test.

Careful! Often these warranty extensions cover or hide potential defects that don't quite require a recall. Perhaps the GS fuel system has some sort of flaw, i.e.- parts physically degrade over time due to chemicals or additives in the gas. It's cheaper to extend the warranty [and replace as needed] rather than replace these parts on all cars.

i believe all new cars don't have to do smog in the first 4 yrs. i bought my acura in 2001 and i won't have to do smog on the car till 05.

but other than that, once every two years.

darn... i just registered with lexus about my new ownership of the vehicle... hope i get the letter too

Hey Rominl

Funny thing is that I don't remember ever registering with Lexus at all that I own a GS... hehehe and then one day I get a letter from them with my name on it with the extended emission warranty stuff.

I don't know if I should be scared or happy because the car is not even registered under my name (under my parents' name). Hmmm... I wonder if my GPS is broadcasting more than my car's position? Hehe.

hahha not sure. the way it works is, when you first got your car, the name and address you told lexus would be in their database and they will send you stuff with that. then as you go to dealer for service more and more you will get into the database too.

now if the car changes ownership, supposedly you will fill out a form and mail it to lexus, then they will put you on the database.

i didn't know until i tried to sign up as owner on lexus.com

I have a question guys. Does this extended warranty cover oxygen sensors? Because my oxygen sensors are bad and wondered if I could get it fix under warranty.
