removing CV axle lock nut ring
Trying to replace right side CV drive axle got as far as removing the tire and that's where the problem begins. The drive axle nut does not have a cotter pin instead it has what is called a lock nut ring. It's shape like a nut but is crimp down on the axle. I was wondering is there any way other than ordering a special tool to take this off.

There are special tools available, what many people do is buy a cheap punch and grind it at a 45 degree angle. This will allow the tool to be hammered in, and lift up the staked portion of the axle nut. Keep in mind to replace the axle nut with a new one, and always torque to spec. Many FWD axle nuts are torqued to 217 ft/lbs, but check to make sure as it could be more or less.
