Heard something about Mobil1 synthetic oil...
I was at my local auto store buying the mobil1 sythetic 10W-30 oil and the clerk said that mobil1 only has 51% sythentic and that anzoil (I think that was it) is the only 100% true synthetic oil. He said he read it in a flyer that the store got and that the government only requires a company to be 51% synthetic oil to call it synthetic. Is this all true?

mobile 1 is pure synthetic from my knowledge. others like quaker state and such are not. Also it is AMSOIL and that is also pure synthetic and a very good brand of oil, but carries a price premium.

Mobil 1 is not completely synthetic, that's why they had to relabel their bottles now to "Super-Syn" formulation. There was litigation between Mobil 1 and Castrol for defining what constitutes using the synthetic term, but Mobil 1 lost in the end. This could probably explain why Mobil 1 dropped their prices of what used to be almost $6/qt to about $4/qt.

As far as I can tell on the Mobil 1 website (www.mobil1.com/index.jsp), Tri-Syn is no longer the product they push and the new product, Super-Syn, is supposed to be FULLY synthetic. To me fully means 100% synthetic. However, if the gov. says it has to be at least 51% syn to be called synthetic then they may be playing on words here.
(Doesn't this kind of remind you of Light/Lite beers. Less than 96 calories and they can call it light. So 95 would be light.)
I don't know, I still like Mobil 1 and change it every 5k.

About 4 years ago Mobil 1 switched to Tri-Syn. I then switched to Royal Purple and have been using it ever since. Also RP costs about the same as Mobil 1. Some of my friends switched to Motul or Redline and they're more expensive of course.

We have no Amsoil, Redline or Royal Purple to speak of south of the border....moreover Mexican law is very strict about putting synthetic on something if it is not completely synthetic. There has been one company Roshfrans that tried to market a synthetic, when most of it was nothing but dino oil, but they claimed the additives made it synthetic. Mexico told them call it semi-synthetic. Mobil 1, Castrol and Quaker state market synthetics down here, and I have seen NO indication on any bottle (in Spanish) that they are semi-synthetic.

Is Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ a fully synthetic motor oil?
Yes, it is. To meet the demanding requirements of today's specifications (and our customers' expectations), Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives. Each Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ viscosity grade uses a unique combination of synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor the viscosity grade to its specific application.

So, I guess if you want to get into splitting hairs on the definition of FULLY, and who's definition it is, go ahead. I won't. And I think we all change our oil often enough, and don't Rally Race our cars, to worry about it.
Am I blind to the fact tat there are other oil producers out there? Nope, like steve though, I just like Mobil1, just like I like Exxon, BP, and Chevron.
