It's a trade-off. The new stuff, the r134a, is common, but it doesn't cool as well in our old systems. The R12 works great but it is expensive and you have to have an a/c certification to be able to buy it. Is there an a/c shop that you trust to give you an honest estimate? Doesn't have be a Lexus shop, a/c is a/c. I had my compressor rebuilt, new drier and condenser, all R12 freon replaced in my 91 LS400 last year for about $750 or so. You can hang meat in my car now, it is COLD.

Good Luck

remember my cost was for a total system rebuild with a lot of labour cost. just to refill the freon would have been much less, probably the 80-100 you were thinking, but I wanted a permanent fix.

oic....well i remember lookin at tha condenser and im not sure if its a problem but there was quite a bit of moisture, condensation when i ran the a/c on for a little bit. is it cuz of the refrigerant? or is there a leak? were u having that problem with your car?

Not sure, I would think if there was a lot of condensation then that is a good thing as it shows a temperature drop. My system was just worn out after 12 Hotlanta summers and 200,000+ miles. My compressor was definitely bad, it was leaking oil in numerous spots, but it could still cool some. My freon was almost all gone. I asked my mechanic to fix everything that looked questionable so I wouldn't have to deal with fixing it piece by piece.
