Changing Tranny Oil
#16
additude,
There are a couple write-ups by members, BannanaGS comes to mind that detail a similar procedure.
1. There is no guarantee that you are removing all the old fluid. Any fluid from the return line to the pan is not being replaced since the "in" line is not pushing the fluid from the return line, it's dumping into your drain pan.
2. Risk of running the car when various parts of the tranny are NOT getting fluid pressure = early tranny failure
3. Just like the flush, it will only replace your current AFT. If the ATF was dark to begin with, expect it to darken within a few months even if you replace ALL the fluid as the new fluid will begin to clean the gummed up deposits in the internal passages.
4. The amsoil procedure works for Domestic pre 92 trannies but NOT for post 92 electronic controlled trannies ( Ask any Corvetteforum member). You tranny is electronic controlled.
You can search for the write-ups, use the amsoil procedure or just do a drain/fill it's your choice. Personally I would put the little extra labor into doing a 3x drain/fill which removes more deposits then a flush since you are driving a few miles between each drain/fill and additional drain/fills with each oil change then to risk a tranny failure or lessen the service life of the tranny
Also, stick with the AFT Type T, currently IV generation ( ATF TYPE-T IV ) it's less expensive then mobil 1 and formulated SPECIFICALLY for your vehicle with the correct amount of stabliziers and silicon content.
