everyone i talked to says it is a problem. i think the best thing to do is just change the oil filter, they say that carries about 1/2 of a quart. any thoughts?

that would be an emergency fix..
I personally would bite the financial bullet and get the oil and filter changed out with proper volumes early.
I don't know what the clearence volume on the 4Runner is. But too much oil can hinder its ability to properly lubricate the moving parts.

elclassico,
Are you due for an oil change? If so, just change your oil. Does the car burn/leak oil? If so, forget it in a couple of miles you will be at the correct level anyways
If it's new oil and filter already, loosen the drain bolt. You may have to remove the bolt completely or you may be able to leave a thread or two screwed to the block. Allow approx 1/2 qt of oil to drain out, retighten and torque to spec. It's a prerunner, you probably don't even have to raise the car.
Overfilled crankcase can lead to oil foaming as the crank and rods turn and churn the oil. It can also lead to premature seal failure (especially the oil pan gasket) if the level is too high. Also be aware that even if the car is only slightly tilted a 1/2 quart high or low reading could be seen.
