i HAVE A 1997 SC 300, A FAR MORE RELIABLE CAR THAN THE 540I THAT WELL IT'S A LONG STORY;DRIVING HOME TONIGHT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THIS IS NOT SOMEITHINS i AM ACCUSTOMED TO IN A LEXUS. I AM QUITE CONCERNED. I DO NOT REALY HAVE THE MONEY RIGHT NOW TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER SHIP. I REMEMBER MY $130 OIL CHANGE FOR MY 99 ES. SO WOULD SOMEONE BE KIND ENOUGH TO ENLIGHTNE ME AS TO WHAT MIGHT CAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON SO THAT I CAN START TROUBLE SHOOTING IT ASAP.

Usually it's just a bad O2 sensor. If you have AutoZone in your area, take it there, they will hook up a computer to your diagnostic port for free to determine what is setting off your Check Engine light.

Could be any of a number of things including:
1) Gas cap
2) MAF Sensor clogged (really simple to clean)
3) Some bad gas
I usually just take the EFI fuse out with the car turned OFF, and then that resets it.

Adding the following to the list:
4) Defective charcoal canister (an important mechanical element that works in conjunction with the evaporative system in your fuel tank). This usually sets off the Check Engine, and if you have it on your Lexus, TRAC OFF warning lights simultaneously.
