Oil change
I plan on doing my first oil change on my 2012 is250 and I want use a K&n filter and housing but I am not sure if that is possible with it being a spin off style and the oem being a cartridge. I know I will need the tool to remove the filter housing but would I be able to replace the oem with the K&n with no extra parts or will I need an adapter? I’m new to doing my own maintenance so any advice or suggestions is greatly appreciated✌🏽

You need the paper cartridge style filter, which K&N does make. Replace the O ring and do not over tighten.

My advice dont use K&N and dont try to find a better filter housing. Just use the original housing and get the Toyota filter. When it comes to oil filters the manufacturer is always better than any aftermarket you can buy.

The OEM Toyota filter is not the best filtration by far based on tests (as shone on the Amsoil box), or as construction is illustrated in this video:

My research on filters that are rated 15-20,000 miles, have 20 micron filtration, and claim 99% effective are:
Fram Ultra
Bosch Premium Filtech
Purolator One
Amsoil
I use the Purolator myself along with Amsoil oil.
