The Pay is great depending on where you live.
Benefits and Salary
Benefits. CBP offers a generous benefits package including personal leave days for vacation, illness and family care, a wide choice of health insurance programs, life insurance, long-term care insurance, flexible spending accounts for out-of-pocket medical or dependent care expenses, a fully portable retirement program that includes a Thrift Savings Plan (similar to 401k), and a uniform allowance. In addition, some locations have access to fitness facilities, related health and wellness programs, and on-site childcare facilities.
These are full-time permanent positions in the excepted service. Initial appointments are made at the GS-5 (at least $29,726 per annum) and GS-7 (at least $36,822) grade levels with promotion potential to the GS-11 ($54,494) grade level without having to reapply. There is also the opportunity to earn overtime pay.
Added to your base pay is Cost of Living and the potential to make up to $35,000.00 in overtime per year. Now that depends on your duty station. Someone assigned to a major east or west coast city, will get more overtime than someone assigned to top of the world Montana. But in 4 years your salary can be in the 6 figures or close to it. Plus after 2-3 years service you have the opportunity to travel worldwide and serve in different countries. Benefits are great if planning to start a family.
Locations. These positions are located at CBP ports of entry throughout the United States including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Applicants must be willing to work in any duty location covered by a geographic location code they selected.
Plus you get to carry a 40mm H&K P2000 24hr carry in all 50 states. Unlike local PD where they have no powers outside there city, town or State. Off duty carry is voluntary.
Let me give you a good senario:
If you start at a GS 5/1 at say JFK airport on 1jun09 with cost of living your actual base pay will be, $33,187 if congress pass the 3.9%. it will be $34,556. plus the average overtime at JFK is at 25,000. For the year you are looking a $60,000. The next year, you get a promotion to GS-7/1 base will be 42806 not counting if you get another raise form congress. Your 3rd year you move up to GS9/1 52,359. Your 4th you get your final automatic grade to GS11/1 about 64,000. Plus overtime if you cap out at 35,000. You are looking at a potential 94k. This is hypothetical. Depends on your work location and how much you work. Now caongress you usually give a annual every year of 2%-3.9%. So that's like 2 raises a year.
Also after you do you 4 years. you can move up to the big league. GS-12 supervisor or above. Anything above a 11 you will have to compete for.
School is in Glynco, Ga for about 15 weeks. Federal Law Enforcement Center.
