Is the Flatlands Brooklyn area safe?
My girlfriend and I are going to NY in a few weeks and a family friend offered us a place to stay. they live in the Flatlands Brooklyn area. My question is if the area is safe enough to walk around at night? We'll most likely be going out on our own from day to night and just concerned because we have to take a bus to the train station.... the area specifically is Kings Hwy and Nostrand Ave.

Any area in NYC is 'safe'. It mainly revolves how you carry yourself on the street. If you walk with confidence, people will tend to leave you alone.
The thing that makes most visitors stand out from locals is how fast you walk. lol, most everybody in NY walks like they are 'late' to get somewhere while visitors tend to walk slower and 'enjoy' the scenery giving predators time to stake them out and get a plan together on how to relieve them of valuables.
That specific area is mainly residential so there's not a lot of people on the streets after dark (But the corner of Kings Hwy and Nostrand is lit very well at night). It's safer to walk through a block full of thugs than to be caught on a deserted one. My suggestion would be to get a number for a local cab company and have them pick you up from the train station if it's late at night and you feel uneasy.

Kings Highway & Nostrand is completely safe. The bus ride to the train station is right through Kings Highway to East 16th street, assuming that you're looking to hop on the Q/B Train. You won't run into any trouble

a bit late but whatever - been in that area for 11years. Totally safe to walk at night, but beware of traveling on Nostrand further up of ave L - starts to get 'fuzzy' after dark. I rarely took the cab home from train station, walk to my house was 8mins and waiting for b82 didnt make sense.
Sash, was that you i was bumpin into on e22nd? you still had the ES(mcv20). And now you're 's-mode'? 18th av and 67/68th streets...?

thanks for the info guys... i ended up getting a hotel in Manhattan. Saving the money for hotel would of been nice but we're going to be in NY for 3 days w/o a car so staying in Manhattan close to the subway and attractions and minimize travel time became more important. I've been to NY a few times but this is my gf's first time, so we're gonna do the tourist thing, we might stop on in to Brooklyn for some falafel's and Peter lugers.... anything happening next weekend of the 6th and 7th?
