Angry LEXUS of Manhattan wants my right nut

THey want me to pay $1700 for a tune up on my 96 400. I was planning on chaning all the cables and spark plugs etc, but I didn't think it would be this much. Anyone in NY knows a good mech. I'm also having a misfire in my engine. But $1700 just for the tune up?

How many miles are you at???
If it's a 30K or 60K 0r 90K...it's considered a major service.....so the bill gets kinda hefty if you tack on the extras....
A guy with an SC4 paid a tad over 3 grand the other day and he had A LOT of stuff done besides his usual 15K service(reseal Oil Pan, Replaced water pump, A/C service, LCA's, and a new Power Steering rack). His car had a little over 120K miles on it and it was a 93. Needless to say, he paid all of it on his AMEX card and left happy.

But $1700 seems about right.....damn labor kills it....even at an employee rate for me....
(But it's good to know some of the lead techs back in the shop )

We didn't do our first major service until 123K miles(just looked over the reciept today when organzing records). The total cost was just over $600 for everything. Of course I've change coolant, power steering, brake, rear diff, and tranny fluid as needed and many times before the major service. Most of it I did myself except for the trans fluid.

We probably won't do the belt again until 240K. Has 193K now.

sc40096 contact my bro he can do the work for you at a much more reasonable rate. his number is 646-523-2084. he is a mechanic, and owns an sc, so he knows these cars.

Well, they want to change my water pump, timing belt Idler Pulley, wires, plugs, rotors, caps etc...my sc is at 82 thousand miles. I guess the previous owner didn't take much time out to maintain it.

OFF topic: Does anyone have a OEM CD changer for sale (cheap)? Mine took a **** and it won't work and right now I don't have enough money to upgrade the entire sound system. Thanks

Just don't take it to them. They are ripping you off big time. You should be able to get the timing belt, water pump, spark plugs for < $600 at a good independant shop. For the big stuff like that, we use a local shop that uses only OEM replacement parts and provides the same warranty as dealer does on parts and labor. They've been in business for a long long time. Try and find a similar shop.

I just did my 180k tune up on my sc300 recently. spark plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, valve cover gaskets, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, serpentine belt, timing belt, water pump. for $700 the parts from carson toyota alone ran me 400 dollars. and i went cheap with an aftermarket water pump for 50 bucks instead of dealer price of 160 at carson toyota. So seeing that you have a sc400 you have 2 sets of caps rotors and plug wires ect. It may run you about 600-700 for parts from carson toyota. But if your getting it from manhattan lexus then they'ld probably charge you up to 1000 for the parts alone. and then theres about 700 for labor. That seams a bit much. I dont believe manhattan lexus is ripping you off thats the price any lexus dealer would probably charge you. I'd recommend you order all your parts from carson toyota and have a trusted local mechanic do the job. they'd probably be able to do it for you for 300 bucks or less. more than half the price of what lexus would charge. so you'd probably be able to get away with the tune up for 800-900 which is half the price manhattan lexus is charging.

For your CD changer do a search for "lexusaudio" or pm him, he can tell you what to do. I and many others have put 92-96 ES changers in the trunk. It works much better. You can find one at car-part.com.

I have had so many bad experiences with Lexus of Manhattan.

They have very serious issues.

Don't we get a discount if we are a clublexus member? I remember the member Johnny Mo mentioned something about that, plus when I got my new lexus key I did get a slight discount because I was a member of Clublexus.

That's correct D-MAN. 15% off of parts & service if you mention that you are a ClubLexus member. I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard it's worked for other members here.
