A New York City police officer has died after being shot while on the job early this morning in Brooklyn, and a manhunt is now underway for the gunman.

Investigators say the incident began when 35-year-old NYPD Officer Dillon Stewart and his partner, who were driving in an unmarked police car, noticed a man in an Infiniti run a red light just before 3 a.m. Monday in Flatbush.

The officers pursued the suspect by car for several blocks, until the man fired several shots from his car, hitting the driver's side of the officers’ vehicle and striking Stewart.

According to police, the suspect then fled on foot into 100 East 21st Street, but a closed garage door allowed the suspect to escape.

Stewart, who was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time of the shooting, was struck once in the chest.

The officer underwent hours of surgery at Kings County Hospital, but doctors say he died around 8:40 a.m.

Stewart is married with two children, and he has been on the police force for five years.

He is the first New York City police officer to be killed in the line of duty this year.

If you have any information about the shooting, the NYPD urges you to call 1-800-COP-SHOT.

COP SHOT is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Just think about this
He died. OMG.. I feel for his family.

Stories like that are the exact reason why cops cant get relaxed no matter who they are stopping for any reason. Next time you get pulled over and a cop seems like hes being too aggressive, just think of this story and understand that cops can't get relaxed until they know exactly who they are dealing with, cuz when they get relaxed is when they let themselves get killed.

At the same time it is a double edged sword. Some cops are over the top when it comes to stops. The treatment in some neighborhoods are different in others. That is a fact. Granted, it is a dangerous job, but there preconcieved notions about people of color and that is still an issue within the NYPD.That is where sensitiviy training comes in. You have groups like 100 blacks in law enforcement talking abot this issue all the time. Mind you they are cops.

get badge numbers and complain to the department. make a complaint everytime it happenes. when it gets over board get a lawer. then have a suit filed against the city. u will win. makes them think twice about pulling someone over for nothing.

Everyone wants to say that cops are doing their job which is fine and I can respect that. but lets not dilute what the NYPD is and that's the largest organized gang around. Just ask yourself when was the last time a cop has ever done anything good for you or anyone you know (especially to minorities). The power that a badge holds is absolutely incredible in this state. The atmosphere that has been created between the police force and the community was NOT created by the community. Anyone over 30 can remember when the police where a welcome force within the neighborhood because you recognized them. They treated you with respect and vice versa. There has never been a police chief to take the community relations issue seriously enough to fix the issues that arose out of the crack epidemic. It's pretty much been "a few bad apples don't ruin the bunch" SORRY, YES IT DOES, until the NYPD sends a clear message that it will not stand behind corrupt officers and that you lead by example, the distaste for officers in general will be inherent. You can say COPS need to always be on guard but guess what, you better be on guard just as much if not more. What other job puts you at the top of the food chain after community college?

Be respectful and don't give them a reason to abuse you any more than what they already are going to do.

guys guys guys, dint mean to start up some controversy, but there will always be bad people and good people, likewise, good cops and bad cops. i am also not unaware that racism does still exist here in NYC, several little instances have happened to be before, i just felt like posting about one. a cop chooses this lifestyle when he enters the force, the life of possible danger, and instances like the one mentioned does happen. however same instances also happen to innocent people. i just wanted people to be more aware of the high authorities and your rights! im with oohpapi44 and aliga.
