well.i'm going all out so the mac mini is going to run about 7 bills new (i may get it used) but that includes the dvd burner/bluetooth/etc... top of the line mac mini.

heres the product list rough estimate:

mac mini - $700
power supply - CNX-P1900 DUAL OUTPUT 140 WATT INTELLIGENT DC-DC POWER REGULATOR - $100
touch screen - $150 -200
griffin powermate - $50
fm receiver - usb - $50
usb hub
firewire hub
camera with nightvision - $100
GPS receiver - $50

plus aftermarket amps and speakers (i was going to do it this anyway..)

so a rough estimate just for the car pc is about 1100-1300 give or take...

i was going to but the pioneer avic d1 originally then i figured for that amount of money what the hell let me install a whole computer and have all the goodies and then some....

Carlos,

At the end of this project what is your car going to be to do in order to justify the investment? Just curious. As much as I love gadgets I'd love to do this but after spending all day at work playing on a computer, I get in my car to get away from loggin on, lol.

Carlos,

never did a carputer install, but I have done quite a few DIY system installs. You know me, always up for lending a hand with a DIY!!! Let me if you need the help.

well the point is i was going to upgrade my audio system to a navi (pioneer avic d1) then i looked at how much it cost and i looked at alternative options (carpc).I would wind up spending about the same either way.. but the mac mini would have oh so many more features and options to play with... internet connection/dvd burning in the car/ipod connections..etc..

... plus i'm always up for a challenge and something different..

i deal with computers all day also so i know what u mean ... but that is also why i wouldn't mind doin it in my car..ease of use and options...

Yeah, get the list all done, and parts in-hand. I have no problem heading out to Queens. Haven't been to Queens since I worked for MOMA in LIC.

Looked at the pics and links...........great stuff. Does the bay need to built so it allows the mini to be removed? Or is it more for security? Also, that machined aluminum faceplate (at least that's what it looks like), custom one-off? Something like that would be necessary I think. Plus it looks ultra hot!

i'm trying to get a hold of the dock... it would just make it easier to take it with me for updates to OS/ software/security/etc... and the install...

the bezel...i'm not going for that aluminum look..i'm going to just use the JDM double din bezel for the touch screen and make it look oem... maybe fiberglass not sure..i have to work it all out like i said but i figure start now and it would be a nice project to do during the winter season...

I will be upgrading my audio system in the near future. I will be compiling a list of items and will be installing it myself soon ( weather permitting). Count me in for the help.

I will be researching on connecting a carputer to my stock NAV system. If it is feasible to do, I will be doing my entire audio/pc all at once as well.

Trying to keep the vandals far away.

Carlos/Sput:

Not trying to hijack the thread but a quick question since it seems like it's a relatively simple thing to add.

Why aren't there a bunch of people modding the stock nav to play DVD's?

number of reasons...

1) there is a hard drive version of it which means you would have to get an external dvd player
2) plus you have to get a module to allow you to run the dvd player its like $400 bucks
3) small screen???

i don't think its cost effective to be honest with you....

hey here's a good deal for anyone who wants to do the carpc running windows...

In Dash Touchscreen Garmin Navigation PC Bundle

Complete With 1-DIN In-Dash Touchscreen, 12V PC, City Select North America and nRoute Navigation Software - 7" IN-DASH LCD Monitor w/ VGA & Touch Screen

$1074.00

http://store.karpc.com/item-In-Dash-...undle--bundle1

thats like the same price as buying a regular ol' aftermarket navigation system...

Plus i don't have the OEM navi system in my car... its too much of a hassle to put the oem one in the car.. Sput has the hard drive version of the navi i believe so it has to be reworked if he wants to run a dvd player .

well if you want to be crazy you can always add DIRECT TV to your car...LOL
