Default Big Problems with 1993 GS300 HELP!

I bought my car 2 months ago from a private party. I loved driving it and I had no problems at all! Had it checked out and everything was fine. A few weeks ago, after driving about an hour on the highway, I took an exit and came to a stop. When i started driving, the car didn't want to shift. I pulled over, turned off the car, stared it again, then it was fine and I drove home. this problem repeated later that day, Took it in to my local trustworthy mechanic and he could not find anything wrong. Drove the car without incident, short drives, for the next 2 weeks. Recently, tried to go to Reno from Chico and wound up stranded outside of Grass Valley. The problem came back and this time, after repeated attempts of turning the car off and on to get to a safe place on the side of the highway, I had steam coming from uder the car. Engine light, radiator everything read normal. Got home on the back of a tow truck. Mechanic hooked the car up to the computer, nothing.
right now the car is in my driveway. I can start it and it will shift into gear but it may not stay that way. Living up in Northern Cal near Chico, I haven't been able to talk to anyone who is evenly remotely knowledgeable about Lexus. Everyone says to they can give me a new transmission but I don't have the thousands it will cost.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to who I might be able to contact to get any knowledgeable help?

Thanks
