Go to Autozone. They will let you borrow one at no charge. All they require is your credit card as collateral in case you run off with it or damage it... I just pulled the code right in front of the store. I went to the one on Berryessa/Capitol Ave. There is also another Autozone at Capitol Exp./Story.

You need hardware and software. The hardware plugs into a socket on the car, the software reads the data stream. There are scantools that are completely dedicated platforms, others are laptop based, and they even have PDA based scantools to work with PalmOS. LOTS of ways to skin that cat, and the cheapest of them are less than $100 to buy. BTW - this is NOT an endorsement, I have not used the really cheap interface units with free software, but they are certainly available.

Google OBDII scantool for more information.

I assume we have a CAN-based system, right? I thought I read that in the repair manual somewhere.

ISx50, yes, we are CAN enabled. Not all MY Lexus/Toyota/Scion are CAN though.
