They were both bad from my experiences. Back in 99' in Milpitas, I received a state ref ticket for my Greddy SP axle-back exhaust which was ultra quiet.

Cop: "Do you know why I pulled you over?"
Me: "No I do not. I know I wasn't speeding."
Cop: "I pulled you over for your modified exhaust."
Me: "Is it too loud?"
Cop: "I actually didn't hear it but I know it's modified because it's shiny."
Me: "I have a certificate from Greddy saying it is 50 state legal and under the max. allowable noise decibel level."
Cop: "I don't care. Sign here."

Now I was 16 at the time and didn't know any better about legalities and such. So I went off to Evergreen college to see the state ref. and he was upset because all I had was an axle-back exhaust which was very quiet and passed the emissions part with flying colors.

The cops may be getting better I guess. I have not received a fix-it ticket for over 6 years now and all of the vehicles I have owned in that timespan have been modified.

That is weak. I'm guessing in the evening so they can try and catch people leaving D&B's? I work in downtown SJ and they only set up sobriety check-points on certain dates like Cinco De Mayo, St. Patrick's Day, etc. I never drink and drive anyways. The only issue I have is trying to get into the bar/club and the bouncer won't let me in because he knows I'm a bit tipsy already.

And yes. He is the motorcycle cop. Like I said, I always heard of stories and didn't think I'd have an encounter with him, especially since Fremont is a fairly large city (in comparison to Milpitas) and I rarely drive there, but I did. He has spiderman-like senses when it comes to modified vehicles.

How come Harley's can break windows with their exhaust because they are so loud, yet cars are so strickened? Are the cycles subject to an exhaust ticket but the one's I hear driving on the streets just haven't been ticketed?

Officer Rosetti was in a Police SUV when he pulled me over several years ago. He pulled me over for tinted windows and made me pop my hood. Punk sent me to state referee for intake.

I was driving in fremont saturday and a cop follows me for a few blocks and pulls me over.

Cop: Do you know why I pulled you over?
Me: ?? no??
Cop: I pulled you over because you have tinted windows
Me: It came factory from Lexus and its not that dark
Cop: Doesnt matter, any tint is illegal, even if it's from the dealer. But I'll let you go with just a warning. Becareful seeing out of the tint.
Me: ???

I was surprised he didnt say anything about my big dual exhaust, no front plates, and me bumpin my system.

So that sticky with the link to Tint Laws by State.... is that outdated or updated? I think I read that anything above 70% for the fronts is legal in CA. Can anyone confirm?

Any kind of tint is illegal on the front 2 windows, according to multiple officers.

That would be correct as most tint shops don't have 70%. If you get a note from a doctor saying sun bothers your eyes they can't ticket you.

If you can find a place with V-Kool($$$$ though) that is 70%. With a doctor's note you can get 35% in front but you can't drive that car at night. CHP vehicles have 70% on the front of their cars, but I agree that 70% is just as useless as no tint.

So has it always been illegal for front tinted windows in CA with the exception of an eye condition?

I believe Fremont Tint Specialist has V-Kool.

I don't believe this is true.

Look at CVC 26708:

(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following conditions are met:

(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent.

(2) The window glazing with the material applied meets all requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205 (49 C.F.R. 571.205), including the specified minimum light transmittance of 70 percent and the abrasion resistance of AS-14 glazing, as specified in that federal standard.

(3) The material is designed and manufactured to enhance the ability of the existing window glass to block the sun's harmful ultraviolet A rays.

(4) The driver has in his or her possession, or within the vehicle, a certificate signed by the installing company certifying that the windows with the material installed meet the requirements of this subdivision and identifies the installing company and the material's manufacturer by full name and street address, or, if the material was installed by the vehicle owner, a certificate signed by the material's manufacturer certifying that the windows with the material installed according to manufacturer's instructions meets the requirements of this subdivision and identifies the material's manufacturer by full name and street address.

(5) If the material described in this subdivision tears or bubbles, or is otherwise worn to prohibit clear vision, it shall be removed or replaced.

That's cool. I go to 99 Ranch all the time. I take BART from El Cerrito Plaza to the 12th Street City Center Oakland stop. Small world huh. We'll have to meet up some time at 99 Ranch...

Haha don't forget to get some grub at Daimo. As ghetto and crowded as the place is, it's the next best thing to Oakland and SF Chinatown.

Well....I work at the Kentucky plant for Toyota and I will be moving to Fremont, CA to work at NUMMI for the next year. I've never been out to the westcoast so, I don't know what's it like out there...

1) I need to find a place around NUMMI area that is pretty sweet BUT, at the same time it's CHEAP! Any advice on location for finding one...?
2) Also, how is the surrounding area for having fun and stuff...?? What is there to do??
3) Any other pointers are welcome....

Thanks in advance!
If you don't mind to drive a little bit further, Castro Valley to the North or Dublin, Pleasanton, Livermore to the northeast off of Hwy 880 maybe of interest for you.
