Default SoCal member traveling up to NorCal. Need tips and Info

Hey fellow CL Nor Cal folks. I plan on doing a road trip out to San Francisco from Los Angeles next Tuesday. Wondering if any of you NorCal guys can help suggest any places / food places I must check out at or on the way up North. Maybe some hotel suggestions?

I plan on taking the 101 up to SF. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys !!!!!

101 all the way up will take way longer than I-5. Are you planning to stop often on your way up? You can always check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Whenever I head down from to Socal, I only stop at kettleman for the in-n-out and gas. What kind of trip will this be? Family/friends?

Here's a previous thread on restaurant recommendations once you get into the Bay.

Thanks svntwosix. That thread should help me with food places. Any recommendations on attractions of places to check out when I am in SF or on the way up? I know the 5 FWY is the shortest route, but taking the 101 cause I want to check out the scenery n other places on the way up.

I am planning on checking out Solvang, Morro Bay, Santa Ynez on the way up. Just wondering if there is something that you can recommend I must check out. Thanks again guys.

^ Funnie, if you want to check out the scenery take 280. Way nicer than 101

Default trip

There are so many places in Sf if you're coming there. Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, Golden Gate Bridge. North Beach has Italian food, China Town(plenty of food there too). the Mission District has the oldest building in SF. The Mission Dolores. Let me know if you come through, I'll even give you a ride in the fire engine and can cruise in that! Good luck and have fun!

For the best "scenic" drive, check out highway 1. I would suggest checking the weather first as it may get foggy. As suggested earlier, the only thing I can think of on the way up to SF is Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is along Highway 1. Avoid Santa Cruz, as the Boardwalk should be closed on weekdays.

My suggestion is to check out things after you get to SF. I believe the ice rink at Union Square in downtown SF will be open. Sffd103 has suggested a whole bunch of places also. Riding the cable car from downtown to the pier is a big attraction for tourists. I'd suggest staying on the outer brim if you want the best experience. Walking the Golden Gate Bridge, or even standing on it is an unique experience given the weather is nice. Otherwise, you'll freeze from the winds. Another notable spot is Lombard Street known for it's winding road. Some nice scenic photos can be taken along Embarcadero Street, which runs along the Ferry Building, Cupid Span, AT&T Park. Yes home of the Giants.
