SAN FRANCISCO—Drivers will soon have to pay higher tolls on most San Francisco Bay area bridges.
The Bay Area Toll Authority on Wednesday approved toll increases on the seven bridges the authority operates, including raising the toll for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to $6 during commute hours.
During other weekday hours, the toll will remain $4, but will increase to $5 on weekends.
Tolls for the Dumbarton, San Mateo, Richmond-San Rafael, Carquinez, Benicia-Martinez and Antioch bridges will go up from $4 to $5.
Carpoolers will have to start paying a toll of $2.50, instead of crossing the bridges for free.
The increases will go in effect July 1.
Truck drivers are facing a separate set of hikes, but those increases have been pushed back for a year.
Tolls on the Golden Gate Bridge, which is operated by a separate agency, will not be affected.

the bridge tolls seem reasonable for the bay bridge, but the fact that carpoolers have to pay $2.50 is rediculous.
1) it is going to slow down the carpool lane for those who still pay with cash
2) those who pay with cash will need to get 50 cents in change or take out two quarters which is a hassel
