Default Anyone trade cars even up?

I may have an opportunity to trade my GX470 for a colleague's GS450h straight up, no cash exchanged. How do we go about doing that? Do we still have to pay sales tax even though no money changes hand?

Yea I'm pretty sure you pay sales tax on the value of the car. I've heard of people puttin gift on the bill of sale and not payin tax.

very likely you have to. you can say gift, but both cars are around 20k on the book, if dmv doesn't believe that, they can still ding you. maybe you can try to do it at aaa if you are member

Still have to pay tax? That's crazy!! Nobody is BUYING a car so nobody should have to pay tax! That's outright silly.

A loooooong time ago I did the gift method and they asked me what I think the car is worth. The lady said that it could be ANY amount so I put 1 dollar. I don't think that will fly with these cars but I think they asked me the value so they could tax me on that.

U still have to pay taxes when transferring ownerships. You guys can put down less so you dont have to pay the full amount.. but "gift" sometimes dont really work anymore unless its family members.(thats what I heard from a friend that work at DMV)

Gotta love it. You get taxed when you buy the car, you get taxed on the maintenance, you get taxed on the parts, you get taxed on the gas, then you get taxed when you sell the car.

Fine, the other guy gets taxed. No matter what you do, someone is getting taxed.

hahaa i was messing with you but yes, i think it's pretty stupid that buying used car get taxed too.

funny thing is if you are in NV, buying used cars from private party and you pay no tax. buying used cars from dealerships you have to pay tax... i wonder for people trading in their cars to dealerships, do they get taxed on the full amount or just the difference

Taxes suck! This country thrive on ripping off people of taxes. You have income tax, you pay taxes on utilities, anything you do you get taxed. Hell we have death tax.

I remember when I traded my SC for my Z we both put $1000 as sale price. Since both cars were 93 I got away with paying little tax
