I'm hoping there will be no major earthquake in my lifetime, but I know we WILL get one simply because we live in the Ring of Fire. 90% of worldwide earthquakes occur in in this ring.
I thought firefighters get called during a natural disaster, or is that NERT only?
Firefighters are the first responders out to any disaster. NERT (Neighborhood Emergency Response Team) volunteers mobilize to help neighbors in their area. This, after they have confirmed that their home and family members are safe.
NERT teams are in communication with the Fire dept. to relay what problems they encounter.
If anyone is interested in learning about NERT (San Francisco), CERT (Other communities). You can check out the SF NERT at www.sfgov.org/sfnert

Oh, i was just wondering cause when you said you hoped you weren't working when disaster struck, i thought it was implying firefighters don't respond. I just realized i could've asked my dad... he's in sffd too and taught NERT a few years ago.
