Keeping damaged parts after an accident?
Not to sure how this works but can you keep the parts off your car that were damaged in a car accident?
For example, your hood gets damaged and the insurance pays for the replacement hood. Can keep the damaged hood to sell as scrap metal?

You are allowed to retain your old parts. Just make sure you tell the shop ahead of time.

Do you really think you can get money for a scrap metal hood? I've gone to several recycle places to get rid of large chunks of metal scrap.
One paid me pennies per pound and the other took it, but gave no money. I didn't do it for the money, but just had no place to dispose of it.
The real money is in aluminum cans.

Since those parts are already replaced and the insurance cost... the shops will trash it or recycle.
You need to tell them ahead to hold on to the old parts ahead of time, before the work.
For me, I asked the shop to keep my old door when they replaced it. I wanted to see if they really replaced it. After seeing the old door, I feel relieved that they didn't pop out the dents and charged my insurance for a brand new door.
I think there's a law that says that shops most hold on to the old parts at customer's request. But it does not say that shops must return old parts. The law was to prevent shops from ripping insurance company and consumer off.

Well the hood was just an example. I want to keep my headlights. The plastic around the light and maybe the clips that hold it in place got damaged, but only around the high beam part of the housing. If they replace the entire thing then I would like to keep that
