Default moving to CA

Hey guys, I'm looking to move to CA in the next few months, perhaps the san jose area. I was wondering what kind of taxes etc I can expect to pay when bringing my car there. My friends in SoCal tell me its something like 10% of my car's value, but he was not sure how the value is determined.

If any of you guys could shed some light on this, or how I can reduce the $$ i need to pay that would help me plan this move out a lot better. Thanks guys

CA resident here. Bought a car from oregon, transfered the title to CA yesterday, 94 sc300, cost me $370 just to transfer title. I will let you know how much it is to register once i "SMOG" it. Which im still having trouble getting a hookup around Sacramento.

Thx guys. The more I read it (and the tool on the DMV) website I think I'll be okay. That used car tax seems to apply only if bought within a year. Seeing my car was bought back in 07 I should be good. (someone chime in if I'm wrong haha).

If it were to happen prob toward the end of the year. Maybe nov or dec. lots of things need to fall in place but just wanted to get a good idea to budget out the move before setting anything in stone.

Yea, pretty sure the car has to be under 12 months old... My parents used to live in SC, my dad bought a new car there, and then moved to CA when it was 6 months old... CA wanted to collect the difference in sales tax between SC and CA, which ended up being about 6% at the time. If the car is over 12 months old, i dont think you'll have to pay the sales tax, just the normal registration and transfer fees.

To check you can always call Ca DMV and ask them, I'm pretty sure they can give you an answer.
