Default Smog check update 2013

Basically vehicles year 2000+ won't require tailpipe test, just an obd2 scan.

Maybe those of us with headers and high-flow cats can pass a bit easier now, assuming the place doesn't do a good visual check

Headers and high flow cats wouldnt really effect tail pipe emissions anyway, for the most part. But the visual will still be part of every smog test unfortunately, so CARB numbers still have to be present.

Reading through that I wonder then if obd2 emissions tests will detect the lack of a cat. Hmm

Of course it will. If you car does not have cats, it will fail the OBD monitor for catalytic efficiency. Unless you have simulators... and in that case, it would then fail a visual inspection for not having cats or rear O2 sensors.

The purpose of eliminating the tailpipe test is because your car already has the proper equipment to tell the state if it is running properly.. your ECU, cats, O2 sensors, etc...

That being said, there will always be a way to try to screw the system.

Sorry I didn't clarify but obviously you'd have simulators. I have yet to go to a smog shop that looked under my car for a cat. Maybe I missed it when they did it but I'm pretty focused on what they're doing when they go through my cars. So my question is if I continue to go to a shop that doesn't care or look for visual things would the obd2 system catch I don't have a cat. Seems like it wouldn't and a win for those running no cats on an obd2 car.
