OEM part price differences from dealer-to-dealer
I'm puzzled. I never understood this, and perhaps someone can shed some light on this for me.
For many years I've been under the impression that the "list" price for an OEM part was the MOST you would ever pay for the part at a dealership. That doesn't seem to be true. I'm finding that dealerships are oftentimes charging MORE than "list" for their parts.

Toyota part 12180-0P021 "Engine Oil Filler Cap, Cap Assembly"
$11.30 "List" price
$14.45 Lexus dealership #1
$17.31 Lexus dealership #2
$20.85 Lexus dealership #3
Can someone please explain this to me? How the heck do they have the NERVE to charge more than "list" for a part?$14.45 Lexus dealership #1
$17.31 Lexus dealership #2
$20.85 Lexus dealership #3

In most USA states, dealers are independent businesses and can charge whatever they please for both new/used vehicles and replacement parts.
In your case, two factors seem to be "in play": dealer greed and the "Lexus upcharge".
The concept of "list price" is non-existent in the new car retail business; instead we have "MSRP", which is a price supposedly recommended, but not mandated, by the manufacturer.
The images attached below are 2 prices for the same part obtained from an online discount OEM parts source. Not only is the "MSRP" higher than what you were given, but the quoted price for the EXACT SAME PART depends on if you claim to have a Toyota RAV4 or a Lexus NX.
Of course, dealers know you may incur a shipping charge if you buy from an online source, so will add that charge to their price. You can probably save some $$ by shopping at a Toyota dealer for the part.
