As our TPMS shows the actual tire pressure for each tire, I assume by a monitoring system within the tire, how does it know which location the tire is mounted on, after they've been rotated?

I don't know what year/trim you have, but on my Base 2020 all I have to do is go into one of the screen in and do some form of RESET/RECALIBRATE. It is built into the car for an average-intelligence owner to do him/herself !
Check your owner's manual
3 Press or of the meter control switches, select the “Vehicle Settings” and then
press .
4 Press or of the meter control switches, select the “TPMS” and then press and
hold the .
The “Tire Pressure Recalibrating. Please Wait Until Complete” will be displayed on the
multi-information display and the tire pressure warning light will blink slowly 3 times.
When the message disappears, initialization is complete.
HEY, MAYBE I'VE BEEN WRONG ABOUT THIS???

Also....IF you replace a sensor, THEN I am quite sure you have to have it 'programmed' to your vehicle. That process I don't know about. But if you have the same sensors on the wheels, and replace your tires, for instance, then I think the process I mentioned above (on a 2020, that is) will work.
