Default repair suggestions

Someone backed into my car the other day. He doesn't want to get his insurance involved. He works at a Nissan dealership and asked me to bring it there. What do you guys think is needed? For sure the black plastic portion under the bumper will need to be replaced as there's a crack in it now. But can they reuse the bumper and just repaint it? I'm assuming they can order Lexus parts there.

Did the fender deform to make the gas cap door stick out? if so, get the insurance company involved, that fender work is going to be expensive. If not, then, it looks like a bumper cover that can be patched up, refinished and repainted. Less than a grand.

huh, i didn't notice that in the picture until you told me. it is kinda odd that it sticks out like that but i think it's just the angle. it's pretty flat in real life. any concerns about having a Nissan dealership work on my car? I guess it shouldn't matter as long as they buy the Lexus parts and paint right?

Yes, they can get Lexus parts, probably at jobber rates too.

I would not go the route of not getting insurance involved if it were me. You might not get the repairs done in the manner it should. Sounds like a cheap way out .I would make the insurance handle it, and you have the right to tell them so. Then if something is not to your satisfaction, you don't have to accept the work, and you can work with insurance company instead of the person involved.

Don't do it, get your insurance involved. Why should you suffer for someone else's inability to drive properly? You're going to regret it if the work is not done properly.

I'd take it to my Lexus collision shop and get an estimate, they're free. Then you will know what has to be properly done and at what cost. Hand it to your Nisson guy and tell him this is what you want done or go the insurance route.

We had a very minor issue on our 300h where my wife was rear ended while at a stop light. Luckily the hitch I put on took the most damage, which wasn't much to be honest. But there are some scratches on the black plastic portion and we had several estimates done on ours through insurance. Just for the black plastic piece it is about $250 just for the part plus labor, which was almost as much as the part at Lexus. At a repair shop they quoted 2.8hrs of labor for installing that part, but at a much cheaper rate.

Again, this is on a 300h, so a slightly different part, but probably going to be similar.

As for the bumper itself, I would think that it is going to be much more than $250. Heck, even if they can fix it they will have to repaint it, and that won't be cheap, mostly because of labor cost again.

As others have said, get the insurance involved, at least you will cover your butt. Heck, ours didn't even meet our $500 deductible so they just closed our our claim. We have great insurance though, USAA, and I don't ever hesitate to use them as we hardly do and they have never raised our rates.

Best of luck,
Phil

Either get the insurance company involved or take it to one of YOUR trusted shops. If he's pushing HIS route it's likely going to be a quick patch, regardless of who is doing the work, especially if he works for the dealership. There's nothing stopping him from telling whoever is going to do the work to limit the cost and go the cheap route.

He has no pride of ownership with your car. Besides, if the repair is under a certain threshold, his premium won't go up.

Best of luck and keep us posted.
