Consumer Reports Picks NX as one of Worst Cars of 2015

CR's October issue is mailed in September. The VW diesel scandal was not revealed until September 18th, long after the issue was on the presses. On their online site (I am a subscriber) no Golf models bear the Recommended mark.
CR has decades of experience rating automobiles, and they do so using their own set of criteria, just as others like JDPower and the many auto magazines do. I have literally decades of experience reading those reviews, and so I have learned to use them in a manner that suits me.
I don't pay attention to their opinions regarding styling, as that's highly personal, as you observe. But I do pay close attention to many of the other things they evaluate.
Your choice, as a consumer, is to not pay money for their products, or to write them if you think they should change their methods. Or you can do what you and others are doing here: complain about them in order to garner support for your acrimony toward them - it really accomplishes nothing else.

CR formerly just listed the vehicles of a type in order of preference, which is probably a better practice than succumbing to the hubris of trying to rank every automobile available on a scale of 1 to 100. But, the bigger picture is being missed. Publishing the best and worst of the year is a rather cheap cynical editorial ploy to boost circulation and website hits rather than soberly inform. Unfortunately, their opinion is passed on as fact. And, I for one, must demur with on line apologists for a publication that is clearly due for some serious critical introspection.
We will have to agree to disagree amicably.

Swacie, as a near lifelong reader/subscriber to CR, I find your accusation that they accept payola from anyone to be irresponsible, even bordering on libelous. CR's entire credibility rests upon their impartiality, and the merest hint of impropriety in this regard would destroy their brand immediately and irreparably. Sour grapes, dude.
Now, if we were talking about any of the "auto enthusiast" magazines, I could see it, as the promise of a multi-million dollar ad campaign might be a strong motivator. But I don't accuse such, as I can't back it up.
