Engine coolant leak - replace water pump
#16
I remember at my 90k service on my 06 is the repair tech said I had a rear axle oil leak and I needed a new axle or whatever the tech name was at $1300+ labor. I have nicely polished epoxy garage floors and can easily see any blemish like oil. I turned down the recommendation to fix and drove the car another 35k miles before trading it in. my garage floors still clean/polished...there never as any leak of oil.

Confirmed of leak
Hi.
I have a 2016 nx with 52,000 km and the tech showed me my defective pump.
There was crystallized red coolant on the outside of the pump.
The tech advised me that it is a problem.
But covered under warranty.
I personally dont don’t care though because I’ve had Lexus before and they all ran beautifully with well over 260,000 km.
In fact, my last one would have lasted far longer if someone hadn’t hit me and totalled it.
I stand by this brand with experience.
All vehicles will have an issue here and there but by no means, should it affect anyone’s complete opinion of Lexus or its service.
Im serviced at Northwest Lexus in Brampton and have been for years.
They have always been honest, efficient and reasonable to me.
I hope this helps.

I own a 2018 IS300 (rebadged IS200T). My water pump was replaced on the first (8000KM) and the second (16000KM) service appointments. I was really surprised that this needed replacing as well and just this week when they told me they replaced it again, I ask them if this is a known issue with the models IS200T and NX200.
I told them that I'm not going to pay for the water pump replacement every 8000 kms after the waranty and just putting that on record so that they are aware.
I thought that this was a way for them to just replace the part and make money too but the service rep told me that they have seen this as a common problem as well. Lexus knows about the defective water pumps and has started a "campaign" about these models and their issues with the water pumps.
I ended up on this forum and just wanted to share the update. If I hear anything else related with this topic, i'll be sure to post it.

That's very strange. If the pumps are failing I wonder if it's the impeller or the shaft that's weak? BMW had some issues with higher mileage impellers breaking on the E46, but some guys would change the pump prophylactically. Did anyone see the engine temp creep up before they had the pumps replaced?

I bought a CPO 2015 NX200t with 47k miles and it had coolant leak and water pump replaced at 45k just before I bought it. Just changed the spark plugs at 85k today at Toyota dealership for $250 as opposed to more than twice that amount estimate from Lexus. Got estimate of $250 at Toyota dealer for 90k service compared to $995 estimate at Lexus dealer.
Also Toyota reported the spark plug/oil change service today so it showed up on the Lexus Drivers service history. I know that didn’t used to happen ten years ago.

Took the NX in today for the 32000KM service, got a call from my Advisor stating they found engine coolant leak and are recommending to replace the water pump. This will all be covered under the warranty. Advisor says this has been a common problem in the NX as they have already needed to fix a few with this problem. My NX is pretty new, bought in summer of 2015 and with 32000 KM. Is this normal on such a new vehicle? Has this been a reoccurring problem on previous Lexus vehicles? Have not seen any posts regarding this issues in the NX Forum has anyone experienced this on their NX.

I have to say I was surprised.....not the usual Lexus reliability I would say, and makes me wonder if the NX has the build quality worth having the Lexus badge ?
Also not happy to hear if this is common issue, and they wait with dealing with it until out of warranty.
I have a GS300, 2005 aswell, which has over 300,000 km on the clock and no sign of any water pump problems (knock on wood).

FWIW my IS200t also had a coolant leak at 25k miles where the dealer replaced the pump under warranty.
