The update is provided by Lexus for free. Whether your dealer wants to charge you for the hour of the technician's time it takes to do the upgrade is up to them.

Should be FREE at the time of 5k or 10k checkup. I hope they wont charge me, just because its not fair, but you never know.

Isn't over the air updates? Don't feel like paying an hour labor for them to do a "free" updates. Dose include Android Auto?

It's not an over the air update. So the technician shouldn't get paid for their hour of time? Do you like to work for free at your job? It will not include Android Auto. It's Apple Carplay and Amazon Alexa.

Do techs get paid by the hour or by the job? I’m sure they get paid for “free” warranty work.

I honestly don't know. I assumed they clock in and out at the beginning and end of the shift.

Tech will be paid by a dealership. Dealership should eat the cost because Lexus decided to penalize first 19 owners by not providing Carplay. Should be treated like FREE recall. Some of us bought car early and they made the money and if everyone paid attention and sellers specify about carplay (they didnt to make a commission as no one would take preOctober) , they would have plenty of pars in the lot

Agreed. Tech should get paid by dealship and dealship will invoice Lexus Corp. This shouldn't be paid by consumer at all.

Techs get paid by the job, represented in hours. So replacing a water pump may pay 2.3 hours (or whatever), but how long it takes them may be different. The majority in the automotive industry get paid this way. Yes they get paid for warranty work as the dealership can bill the manufacturer. But in this case, there's nothing "broken" that would be covered by warranty.

Trust me, I think it would be great if your dealership covers this for free and still pays the tech. But didn't you buy the car knowing it didn't have Carplay? Not trying to sound crass here, just realistic.

On another note, I'm very glad automakers are starting to put in modular systems. Allowing them to upgrade in the future. Most people are use to their smartphones being updated this way. But automotive systems historically haven't had this capability.

This is a software update. The dealership can eat the cost.

Just spoke to Northside Lex in Houston super friendly tech gal- apple carplay software to begin retro install on at least all 2019 models in mid-May. They will send out emails to schedule. Cars with navigation will take 1 1/2 hours, non-navigation vehicles 1 hour. No charge. My wife is beside herself, although I cannot figure out why. But if she's happy,.....

She’s happy because the factory Nav isn’t great.

Totally agree and I would even add most apps of the Enform suite are not very useful

Over at MacRumors in post https://forums.macrumors.com/threads...#post-27333935 posted a link for Toyota site to update the vehicles audio media systems software. Change the link from Toyota to Lexus you get the Lexus site for downloads. Nothing there yet for the 2018 NX's.

I’ve received a few over the air updates on my 2019 which I think are the same as what is offered online. An update to CarPlay is probably a little more involved. I could be wrong but I’ve been told it has to be done at the dealer.
