I don't see how any vehicle couldn't have this upgrade. Cant Apple Play be purchased and installed by anyone? Am I missing something?

I purchased my NX yesterday. It does not have CarPlay because it was produced prior to October. However I asked the dealer and he did have two NX's out of 122 that had CarPlay. This was the first dealer that seemed to know the most about it. They were the only two which had November ship dates. I looked at those cars they were FSport, White with red interior. Not the colors I wanted. On the dealers invoice it had listed that it had CarPlay. It was included as standard equipment. I just didn't want to wait so I purchased without it.

I contacted Lexus about this and they said they have no plans to update older models. I saw the Mazda announcement as well and they are upgrading systems back to 2014. Lexus just deleted some apps that were pretty much useless with the exception of Pandora. I have the navigation system in my car and while it is comprehensive, it really falls down when you are trying to do voice commands while driving. I can't tell you how many times my wife and I have reached for our phones to ask for directions because we were thoroughly frustrated with the voice recognition on the Lexus navigation. Why can't Lexus and Toyota do an upgrade that offers their customer base the ability to use Carplay or Android auto. I am a loyal Toyota and Lexus owner and this is totally frustrating.

No you can’t. Each auto manufacturer has their proprietary operating system. Think windows, android, iOS etc.
For third party access to these systems, the automaker has to allow access. This ensures big upgrade fees and encourages people to purchase new cars as the tech quickly gets old.
Only Toyota has access to the Toyota platform so they have to release and install the few lines of data that would allow Applecarplay to work. It would also require a new USB apple compatible dongle that costs about $50 and can be installed to look OEM.
Is it straightforward, yes. Can you do it, no, as you would have to break into their system.
In all honesty, my perfectly functioning 8 yr old Lexus would keep going for another few years but I’m considering an upgrade as the entertainment system is so outdated. If Applecarplay was backdated, they know they would lose sales as mechanically their cars go forever.

Default Anyone think this could work?

https://m.aliexpress.com/item/329516...g1544986838345

Ive seen some YouTube videos of it working. I don’t mind paying $500 if it’ll actually work. Bought a 2018 Lexus NX a couple months ago, was told CarPlay was NOT coming to the NX in 2019 so it didn’t matter if I waited. Really annoying. So now trying to figure out anyway to actually add it.

I bought 2019 NX300h believing that it comes with CarPlay. I saw it as a standard for 2019 NX on Lexus web page and didn't ask anything to the dealer. (Also, dealer didn't say anything...) And, surprisingly, the car didn't come with CarPlay.

This is the 2019 NX features page on the official Lexus web:

It has bold text "Standard On: NX 300h, NX 300 F SPORT, NX 300" without any (*). OK, the fine print has "Standard on all NX models from October 2018 production".

First, people doesn't read such detail description. It's stated as a standard feature.

Second, it was talking about "2018 production". I'm buying 2019 model. As a simple customer, why I should care about 2018 production? Who cares about the manufacturing date when buy a car? Only model, year (model year), and color matters. The dealer's car description doesn't even mention manufacturing date. It only shows model, year,, VIN number, and a meaninglessly long list of spec & features. (Yes, VIN has the info... But, I don't know how to decode it.)

The dealer seems doesn't want to do anything about this. Is there a way to report Lexus web as a false advertisement or, at least, misleading buyers?

Default False advertising

similar recent purchase. Printed literature states carplay is standard on 2019 model Only to findout /realize after the fact that only production after oct 2018 would include. So in other words early 2019 models are really left over 2018 production cycle in my mind. Lexus needs to make it right but probably wishful thinking unless enough folks make an issue with it. It’s probably a different head unit or unit with more memory to handle the extra software etc. might also be a different USB port neither of which are likely an easy swap after the fact hence no upgrade stance as a best guess. A reasonable explaination isn’t much to ask as a starting point in my opinion.

No, not that hard.

Mazda is providing an Applecarplay update for all its vehicles.

Requirements:
-post 2014 units to present
- 40 mins in the dealer for the upgrade download for the operating system and a new USB CarPlay compatible outlet
(replaces the existing USB outlet to maintain OEM look)
-~$300 US

Lexus is dropping the ball on technology. Seriously considering a German brand for next purchase. Not only entertainment tech but also their engines (other than LS) are getting outdated.

The UX is a case in point. Miserable engines and in Australia no apple CarPlay.

Talking to the dealer about a resolution. They will talk with their tech specialist to find if there is any upgrade method (official or non-official). I don't have much hope on it, anyway.

The last resort would be an exchange. Fortunately, the dealership has 5-day (500 mile) exchange policy. (It has been only 2 days since the purchase.) I didn't want to cause too much trouble and tired to use the Enform + Scout GPS....But... that was an horrible experience. Totally unusable. Also, checking the current inventory on dealer's web page, almost every NX 300h on the list claimed to have CarPlay. It made me feeling somewhat being betrayed.

If Lexus really cares their customers, they should provide a company-level remedy taking the responsibility of the misleading advertisement.

STAY AWAY FROM Scout GPS! That software will get you killed! Twice now, on the INTERSTATE, Scout GPS gave directions as follows; "Make a U-turn." Umm...no thanks.

Good luck!
