Unhappy NX vs RX

Hi- it is just me and my daughter, and we had a 2014 RX 350 which we loved. Unfortunately we got hit and it is totaled. We are looking at used RX 350s vs new NX 300hs. I loved my 2014 RX 350 -it's handling, quietness, comfort...and was wondering if the new NX 300h was comparable. I'm not looking for speed or off-roading, just mainly safety and comfort.
I am not a big fan of the 2016 RX 350 remodel and am having a hard time finding low mileage RX 350 2015s. What are your opinions?

Is the 2014/2015 RX 350 comparable to the 2018 NX 300h?

Thanks.

I would drive a couple of NX hybrids and see if the ride and size is what you want. I’ve not driven an RX350 but I hear it’s smoother and softer riding than the NX200T that I have. I would go for the one you like best.

We moved from a 2013 RX 350, which is basically the same model as the 2014 or 2015. The NX ride is a little bouncier and it is definitely noisier. The NX has more road noise and a bit more wind noise as well. However, we like the size much better and getting in and out is much easier for my wife who is 5'4" tall. Of course, our RX rarely got better than 18 or 19 mpg in town and the NXh gets 32 - 34 in town, depending on the time of year. The NX has more comfortable seats and is quieter than the competitors we test drove and many other cars, it just isn't as quiet as the RX or our ES. The NX doesn't have nearly as much cargo space either. We had to lay the rear seat down in the NX just to fit a wheelchair in the back. If you should haul your daughter's bicycle in the back you might not like the reduced cargo space. So an answer to your question depends so much on how you use the vehicle and I can only say that we are happy with the move from an RX to the NXh, but it won't be the best answer for everyone.

Buy RX. I have both. Buy RX. Unless you just got to have better mpg, but then you simply do not buy Lexus. Buy Highlander Hybrid. Superb car.
Otherwise, do this. Arrange for long term test drive. As in - all day long use. it'll show itself. You will NOT like it as much as you liked your RX, it's just not the same vehicle.

My vote is a 2016-2017 RX450h. We just traded in our 2015 RX450h for a used certified 2017 RX450h with 12,000 miles. It was a Lexus loaner car and looks brand new with a better warranty than new. Payed the price of a new NX hybrid. Love it!!!

Default RX Vs. NX450

Our lease on olur 2015 RX450h was ending, and our choices were buy out the car, new 2018 450h, or NX. We owned a 2006 RX 400h and loved it, so when we came back to Lexus (after a foray with a BMW X3) we found a great deal on one of the last 2015 450h available. We loved the car, even though it was a little large for us. We nixed the 2018 RX, as it has grown even longer - way to big for us. We drove a loaner NX300, and immediately loved the smaller size and more nimbler handling. We were very close to a deal on an NX300 that was the exact color combination we wanted (Mica with saddle interior) when we realized we'd not driven a 300h. We test-drove one and remembered why we always chose the hybrid. Much quieter and smoother than the non-hybrid, better ride with the weight of the battery down low. We did the deal and we're thrilled with our choice. We're averaging over 34 mpg, and love the updated electronics (except for that infernal trackpad).

Don't choose until you've driven all three. (RX, NX, NX Hybrid).

I recently purchased a 2018 NX300h. When I was in the market for an SUV, I looked at the RX350, RX450h, NX300, and NX300h. The RX450h I removed from consideration due to it's high price tag and I could not find any used current generation RX hybrids here in the Phoenix area. The RX350 was nice, but it was too big of an SUV for my needs and came across heavy to drive, despite the 3.5 V-6. I test drove the NX300. The SUV was the perfect size for me; however, what turned me off on the NX300 was the turbocharged engine. There was enough turbo lag when accelerating the SUV from stop to start, like it needed a second to get going. It bothered me enough that I elected that wasn't the SUV for me. That left the NX300h. The NX hybrid moved right off from a stop due to the electric motors. It did take me some time to get used to a hybrid, but around town the SUV moves effortlessly. Freeway driving is the only downside in that it takes a little time to get the NX hybrid up to highway speed. But once you do it has no problem maintain 70 to 80 mph speed. Overall, I'm happy that I chose the NX300h as my SUV. I even have a tow package on it and have hauled a small trailer around a couple of times. To reinforce I made the right choice, I had an RX350 as a loaner car while my RC was being serviced. Driving the RX confirmed the NX hyrbrid was the right car for me.

We took my wife's 18' NX to the dealer to get the first 5k service done. While we were there I asked for an RX as a loaner. We drove that around all day. I thought it would be much faster than the NX.. .it wasn't, so in that aspect I was relieved that it wasn't a night and day difference in terms of acceleration or speed. The back seats looked super roomy. That was a plus. But since I don't sit in the back seat it's not a huge deal to me. The RX definitely sounded nicer in terms of road noise. It was less noisy and seemed to ride more comfortably. You could sense the weight to it. I wasn't a fan of the interior layout or the center console. BUT I LOVED the super wide center screen.. We have the larger screen in our NX and I would have loved an option for a RX screen size for the NX.

I think it terms for us the NX is a good fit but it could be better in terms of some enhanced features. I get Lexus doesn't want to take sales away from a model but I've always been under the point that if I wanted to pay for said options on a smaller vehicle then at least give me those options... IE: Porsche. You can configure a damn 718 Porsche for more than certain model 911's... But I get it, two completely different groups/manufactures and completely different selling/pricing models. Toyota can't do what Porsche does...lol :-(

Looking for another Lexus SUV. Been through 3 RX350's and now looking at a NX hybrid. Decided to wait until that new GX comes out. Looks ok, but have to compare the ride, quality, and performance levels compared to the NX and RX models. A new GX won't be that cheap if filled with options, so may go for a slightly used NX or RX.

I've had several RXs including the hybrid, '13 RX 350, now a '17 RX 350, and had the '15NX 200t . Also owned 4cyl Lexus hybrids (HS + CT) and driven an ES300h, so familiar with their operation comparable to a 300h. For a detailed review, see here: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/nx-...omparison.html

The "Coles Notes" version is this:

Where the '10-'15 RX shines:
1. Cargo capacity (close to 40 cu ft vs 28 real world in the NX, see here)
2. NVH (close to a tie, but engine and wind noise slightly better than NX)
3. Engine/transmission responsiveness (comparing RX350 to NX turbo 4cyl. )
4. Ride comfort (RX slightly better vs non-AVS NX's thanks to softer dampers and longer wheelbase)
5. Interior comfort and room (though only marginally bigger than the NX)

Where the '15+ NX shines:
1. Tighter construction/fit/finish (RX rear seat and B-pillar/door rattles common)
2. Newer tech (vs '15 RX) such as lane keep assist and remote touchpad
3. Slightly better on fuel.
4. Smaller, easier park and fit in a garage though turning circle is not that great (about like the RX)
5. Styling (subjective)

Additional notes. If you're looking at the NX300h, it will obviously be significantly better in fuel, takes regular gas (gets you 30-32 mpg), will be more quiet in city speeds, is peppy and responsive, though acceleration is so-so and the engine note/whine is noticeable under harder acceleration and not as refined as the RX's 3.5 V6 (or RX Hybrid).

Happy shopping!
