Default Android Auto Starts on Phone

I have noticed recently on my Pixel 3 that when I start my car Android Auto starts on my phone. Somehow it detects when I start my car but I don't see anything on the Infotainment system that would indicate that the car recognizes the start of AA. Yes my phone connects properly and I can use it as I normally would. Am I missing something from a functionality stand point? Is there a reason to use AA on my phone while I'm driving?

Android Auto is not supported by Lexus (yet). Apple Car Play was just introduced to a couple Lexus
models including the NX, LS, LC and 2019 ES.

Thank you I am aware of that. The question is why does it start as soon as I start my car?

Perhaps your phone is set to launch AA when it senses a connection. I am only familiar with
Apple Car Play, that requires a USB cable (and bypasses the Bluetooth). Are you charging
and streaming music with a cable?

No I don't do either. This just started recently. I've had the phone since last October and AA starting on its own is new. May have found the answer in settings. It says start when connected to Bluetooth. I never turned it on but who knows. Not sure I understand the advantage of AA. When I start it maps, phone and music are there but I already have Waze, my phone and Sirius (I don't use Pandora etc.) So I'm not sure of it's usefulness. Is Apple Car Play any better?

There's a setting under Android Auto that allows you to select which Bluetooth devices are recognized as cars and therefore trigger auto-launches. You might want to check on that.

Have you set the Waze app to play voice and sound "as a phone call?"

Lower left corner of the Waze app "magnifying glass" icon, upper left corner "gear" setting icon,
"voice and sound" banner, "Play sound via", Play as Bluetooth phone call.

This is for iPhones, Androids didn't get this at the same time but I believe they do now.

Works just like a phone call, you are listening to any source and it will mute and the screen
will show a call from your number and the tone or verbal commentary will play.
Moment later your back to your program!
