I'm from the Philippines and the Lexus SUVs we get here are Middle East units (Gulf Coast Countries/GCC). 0W20 is recommended in the manual as well.

As long as API (or ACEA for Europe) ratings are met, sticking to manufacturer recommendations probably wouldn't hurt. The ratings take care of oil and additive durability.

 

With these engine designs I read somewhere that anywhere from 0w20 - 20W50 is specified. I'd say doesn't make sense to go thicker than 10W50.

 

Timing chains and turbo's put a huge amount of stress onto your oil supply. If up to 20W50 is fine for practically any Toyota/Lexus engine (let's say 10W50 to be safe due to very cold weather conditions) that means 0w20 would be wildly thin and totally not recommended to use inside an engine with such generous clearances.

Can you use 0w20 if you really wanted to? Absolutely yes. Will you run into any issues doing so? Unlikely if you're talking just short term.

Goes to show that some Lawyers and CAFE representatives are doing a good job dictating what sort of oil everybody is inclined to "trust." It's all part of their agenda.

I found an owners manual for the United Arab Emirates 2020 NX300.
Temperatures in the UAE are not much cooler than in Malaysia. Average for January is ~68F (20C); July and August both average more than 100F (~38C).
The viscosity number before the "W" can be ignored, as there are no cold winter starts in this market.
Lexus appears to give owners the option to use an oil viscosity of 20 or 30, at their sole discretion. None of the 4 cited options appears to be particularly recommended over the others.

 

Thank you, n0v8or. Interesting that the manual does not state a specific oil viscosity as recommended first, and the other oils as an alternative. Anyhow, very hot climate has different set of rules, just like very cold.
