My right passenger door won’t open from the inside, only from the outside. Has this happened to anyone?
There is no child-lock for the front two doors, so that can’t be the issue. I do realize when the door is open a very small plastic part raises when I pull from the outside handle, but it does not raise when I pull from the inside handle.
The door latch is operated by a cable that runs between the interior door handle and lock/latch assembly.
There are 4 possible causes I can think of:
-1- The cable has become detached at either end.
-2- The cable actuator is broken or damaged (can happen at either end); these are cheap plastic.
-3- The lock assembly has failed internally.
-4- The cable is broken (least likely, in my opinion), or the retainer ball has become detached from the end..
You can easily check if the ball at the inner end of the cable is fastened at the door handle.
If the interior of the vehicle is not above 60F, first warm the plastic around the handle with a hair dryer so it will not be brittle and break.
Refer to the attached images (1 , 2, and 3).
Image 1 is the inside of the door trim panel, the latch and lock cable ends are circled in red.
Use a nylon trim tool to pry the small plastic cover behind the interior door handle. Pull the handle toward you and pry where shown in image 2.
With a flashlight, you should be able to see the round silver end of the cable when the handle is pulled (circled in image 3). It should stay in place as the handle is moved through its entire range of travel.
To replace the plastic cover, push near the center until it snaps into place.
